Large item pick ups 

Large items that are unable to fit into your 95-gallon trash toter can be picked up free of charge on Monday and Friday only, please call 812-532-3500 option #3 to schedule your pick up. If you call the same day before 10am it will be picked up, if you call after 10am it will be picked up the following Monday or Friday.

ALL items containing freon must be tagged by a licensed/authorized company stating freon has been removed, mattresses do not need to be wrapped.

FREE brush pick up is scheduled October 1st-November 30th. FREE Christmas tree pick up is scheduled from January 1st-January 31st, all ornaments and lights must be removed.

The Civil City Garage is no longer a City Dump for public access.

For purchases and rentals payment must be made in person at the Lawrenceburg Clerk Treasurer’s Office Monday – Friday during the hours of 8:00 am – 4:30 pm located at 212 Walnut Street, Lawrenceburg In. 47025.  ***Only cash and checks are accepted.***

This service is only for residents that live within the city limits of Lawrenceburg.

Residents Can Now Recycle More Material Than Ever Before

The Lawrenceburg Recycling Program is sponsored by the City of Lawrenceburg with funding in part from The Recycling Partnership. The Recycling Partnership, a nonprofit organization utilizing public-private partnerships to transform recycling across America, selected our community to receive grant support towards recycling cans, education and community outreach. The City of Lawrenceburg and The Recycling Partnership are proudly committed to ensure that fundamental recycling options are available to create a healthy environment and economy.

All City of Lawrenceburg residential households with less than 6 units will receive a FREE 95-gallon recycling can. These cans replace the 18-gallon recycling totes used previously. No more sorting, bending, or lifting – your new 95-gallon green recycling can will have two wheels for easy maneuvering and a lid to keep things tidy. The extra space will make recycling easier and provide more room for storage. Everyone wins when recycling with cans.

Apartment/Condo residents may also participate with Recycling Drop Off Location available 24/7 at the Lawrenceburg Fire Department on Bielby Rd. The Civil City Garage will not be collecting recycling bagged items.  Curbside recycling collection on Thursday’s will only be for 95-gallon recycling cans. 

As part of Rumpke’s ongoing commitment to ensure our customers can recycle the most amount of material possible – we are once again growing our acceptable items list, by implementing the Hefty ReNew™ program in Greater Cincinnati

Hefty ReNew™ is a hard-to-recycle plastics recovery program that offers residents and businesses served by Rumpke Recycling a convenient way to divert more waste from landfills. Beginning in November, residents in eight counties in the tri-state area, including Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and Warren counties in Ohio; Dearborn County in Indiana; and Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties in Kentucky can participate.

People who choose to participate can purchase Hefty ReNew™ orange bags at their local Kroger store or online at Kroger.com. For additional online options, visit HeftyReNew.com. Each orange bag features a list of hard-to-recycle items that can be collected in the bag for recycling. Simply fill the bag with those items and when it’s full, tie it up and then place the bag in a Rumpke Recycling bin or public recycling drop box for collection. It’s that easy! Rumpke will then collect the recycling bins, sort each material by commodity type as it typically does, while pulling out the Hefty® ReNew® orange bags. The bags will then be sent to specialized recyclers that will use the materials to create new and useful products including plastic lumber and irrigation blocks.

The Hefty ReNew™ program is intended to complement, but not replace, current recycling routines. Therefore, it’s important for Rumpke Recycling customers to continue putting paper, cardboard, cartons, glass and plastic bottles, tubs, cups, aluminum cans and steel cans in their Rumpke bins or community drop boxes loose and unbagged.

While bags won’t be available through retailers until November, residents in participating counties can request a free Hefty ReNew™ starter kit beginning now at bit.ly/3Fb9YZx. Businesses and municipalities will soon be able to order commercial size bags directly from Rumpke.

FAQs: Residential Recycling Cans & Trash Collection

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CITY’S CURBSIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM?
Currently, only City of Lawrenceburg residential solid waste customers (those that receive garbage collection services provided by the City) are eligible to receive curbside recycling services. Households that are 6 units or less may receive a free 95-gallon recycling can per unit.

WHAT IF I LIVE IN AN LARGE APARTMENT COMPLEX, AM I STILL ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN RECYCLING?
Yes. All Lawrenceburg city residents living in apartment dwellings over 6 units without recycling cans may receive a FREE 16 X 20 large recycling tote bag to collect and deliver recycled material to participating recycling locations. Extra City of Lawrenceburg recycling bags are available for purchase at $5.00 per bag payable to the City of Lawrenceburg at the Clerk

RECYCLING CANS
No more sorting, bending, or lifting – your new 95-gallon green recycling cans will have two wheels for easy maneuvering and a lid to keep things tidy.  All recycling must be placed in the 95-gallon green recycling can.  Recycling should be placed loose in the can, not in plastic bags. Garbage should still be stored in garbage bags and then placed in your blue garbage can for disposal. Garbage placed in the green recycling can will not be picked up.

HOW DO I SET OUT MY RECYCLING OR TRASH CAN PROPERLY ON COLLECTION DAY?
Place your recycling or trash can on the curb after 8 p.m. the night before your collection day or no later than 6 a.m. on your collection day. Place the can in the roadway within 4 feet of the curb and other cans and objects, with the handle facing the house. If you place your garbage can in an alleyway for pickup, then place your recycling can in the same spot for pickup. Make sure the can is accessible to our crews. Do not place cans underneath short trees or behind mailboxes, lamp posts or parked cars. Improperly placed cans will not be collected.

WHERE DO I STORE MY RECYCLING AND GARBAGE CANS?
Please store your cans behind or beside your home, on or under a back porch, or inside your garage. Do not store them on the sidewalk in front of your home or at the curb.

WHAT MATERIALS CAN I PUT IN THE RECYCLING CAN?
Your new green can comes with information about what can be recycled. Here is what we collect in the recycling cans:

Yes, you can recycle glass bottles and jars in your recycling can.

IS THE CITY REALLY RECYCLING WHAT I PUT IN THE CAN?
Yes! We bring everything collected on recycling day to the Cincinnati Material Recovery Facility, where it is processed and sent to processors to make new products like cardboard boxes and safe packaging for food and medical supplies. We do use the same trucks for garbage and recycling, but not on the same days – we dedicate the trucks to trash collection on Tuesday and Wednesday with recycling collection only on Thursday. We do not mix the garbage and recycling.

LOST, STOLEN OR DAMAGED RECYCLING CANS
Each recycling can will be assigned to an address. If your can is lost or stolen, please call the Lawrenceburg Civil City Garage at 812-537-7138. You may write your house number on the can with a grease pen for easy identification. Additionally, a police report should be filed with the local police department immediately upon vandalism or theft.

Recycling Myth Busters

MYTH: Most Americans recycle all they can. ANSWER: False.

Research shows convenience and commitment are required for maximum recycling. For instance, do you have recycling containers in multiple rooms in your home? If not, recyclables in rooms other than the kitchen often get thrown away. Plus, the more members in a household who commit to recycle, the better the quality of the materials they recycle.  The new 95-gallon Recycling Cans offer maximized recycling capabilities which in turn decrease trash collection. 

MYTH:  Recycling arrows on a container means it is recyclable.  REALITY: Only in some cases.

Review the ACCEPTABLE RECYCLING ITEMS and the ITEMS NOT COLLECTED FOR RECYCLING guidelines for the Lawrenceburg Recycling Program to see what’s recyclable and what’s not. Many plastics cannot be made into new products.

MYTH: Containers must be squeaky clean in order to be recycled. ANSWER: False.

While all bottles, cans, and containers should be clean, dry, and free of most food waste before you place them in your recycling container, they don’t need to be spotless. The goal is to make sure they are clean enough to avoid contaminating other materials, like paper. Try using a spatula to scrape cans and jars, or using a small amount of water, shake the container to remove most residue.

MYTH: It doesn’t matter if something belongs in the recycling can, the hauler will sort everything anyway. ANSWER: False.

There are increasing amounts of non-recyclable items sent to Material Recovery Facilities, and all of them must be removed by hand by trained staff or mechanically sorted so they don’t contaminate the high-value recyclables. Non-recyclable items placed in your recycling containers increase the cost of recycling, slow the process, and pose safety risks to employees. Focus on only recycling the most valuable materials – clean bottles, cans, paper and cardboard. If you’re not sure whether something is recyclable, throw it in the garbage to protect the acceptable recyclable items in your recycling can!

MYTH: Hoses, tanks, shower curtains, swing sets, etc. are made of plastic, so they must be recyclable. ANSWER: False. 

If it’s not “Cardboard, Mixed Paper, Cartons, Metal or Plastic Containers, or Glass Bottles & Jars” it doesn’t belong in your curbside mixed recycling can and may even require special handling. Just because an item is made from plastic, or contains plastic parts, doesn’t mean recycling facilities can handle it. There are other resources (e.g., Earth911.org) that can help answer questions about what to do with non-recyclables or household hazardous waste.

MYTH: All types of glass bottles and jars are recyclable. ANSWER: Varies by jurisdiction

Glass recycling varies by jurisdiction and communities across the U.S. Some communities collect glass at drop-off locations only, some collect glass separately at the curb or with other containers, and many include glass with all other recyclables. Bottle bill laws in CA, CT, OR, IA, MI, ME, VT, MA, NY allow for the return of a per-bottle deposit when bottles are returned to return centers or retailers for recycling. Please refer to our ACCEPTABLE RECYCLING ITEMS for more information on how to recycle glass. No window panes or broken glass accepted.

MYTH:  Aerosol cans are acceptable in the recycle bin.  REALITY:  It varies by jurisdiction.

The Lawrenceburg Recycling Program will accept empty/dry aerosol cans (without the caps) only. If the can isn’t empty, it could be dangerous. Some fires are caused in baling machines from trace amounts of can chemicals, and cans with leftover propellant have been known to become projectiles when densified/baled. Waste Management facilities and commodity vendors accept steel, mixed metal and aluminum aerosol packages. Multi-material aerosol packages are not recyclable.
